In spring 2009 a ceremony was held on the main campus of the Fudan University, Shanghai for the foundation stone laying of the Nordic Centre premises. The Centre, scheduled to be completed in spring 2010, will be a visible testimony to co-operation between Chinese and Nordic universities and researchers.
The Centre’s activities involve 25 universities from all the Nordic countries. Courses arranged at the Centre go from intensive courses at master’s level to doctoral education, summer courses, likewise seminars and workshops with participants from both China and the Nordic countries.
In the course of its 15 years of operation, the Nordic Centre has developed into an important base for Nordic research and researchers, which helps to forge links to both Fudan University and other Chinese institutions of higher education.
The Programme Manager at the Centre is Martin Bech, originally from Denmark. The ministries of education of all the Nordic countries did much to finance the construction work. The present Chancellor of the University of Tampere, Krista Varantola, played a prominent part in arranging fund-raising. Chancellor Varantola is to chair the administrative organ of the Centre for a second term of three years.
Those present at the foundation stone laying included Dr. Qin Shaode, Chancellor of Fudan University, the Head of the International Office, Professor Chen Yinzhang, all the consuls of the Nordic countries and a large number of Nordic researchers and officials who are responsible for the operations of the Nordic Centre.
